Remarkably, some of this debris had caught fire, and the flames continued to burn as the straws floated along the current. This unusual occurrence of fire traveling on the water's surface, without being extinguished, produced thick black smoke and presented a frightening scene. According to the filmer Ms. Lin, the straw may have been artificially ignited to prevent excessive debris from piling up in the river along with the current and causing serious consequences.
